The “Sonnbühel”, probably the oldest ski hut in the world, has been the source of delights on the Kitzbühel Hahnenkamm since 1924. In 2016, together with Ivan Marzola from South Tyro, Dr. Christian Harisch started a new era at the Sonnbühel with the intention of re-inventing Alpine gastronomy.
“Dolce far niente” was already the Sonnbühel’s reputation in the “Golden Twenties” of the last century. When wealthy industrialists and members of the elite Berlin Golf Club soaked up the sun at this location, surrendering completely to the exquisite natural surroundings and the pleasures of skiing, they were even thinking of building a golf course up here. The reputation of the Sonnbühel grew as – managed as a mountain guest house after the war – it became a hot spot for the ever-growing number of skiers and mountain hikers.
The many celebrities from home and abroad did not choose it as their favourite location in the Kitzbühel Alps just for the splendid location, the authentic atmosphere and the popular sun terrace. Exuberant parties, exclusive aprés ski and in particular a cuisine nonchalantly declared by the star chef Eckart Witzgmann to be “one of the best above 1,000 metres”, also made it into an outstanding and famous “reinvigorating” part of the legend of Kitzbühel.
Love of the mountains is a tradition in Ivan Marzola’s family: A precious inheritance, left by a father to his children. This passion was probably also the reason why the family, who actually come from Grado, have settled in the Val Gardena and taken over the famous Comici Mountain Hut. And it was also this fascination with the mountain world – this life-affirming, deep connection with nature that has never left him since childhood and often given him many breath-taking moments – that led Ivan to Kitzbühel. There by chance he met someone who shared exactly this same enthusiasm, and the two of them at once felt a spiritual connection. This was Christian Harisch.
Over a glass of good wine – as is proper in Tyrol – Ivan and Christian then decided to try and create a new gastronomic concept in Sonnbühel. Christian was immediately inspired by the innovative gastronomic concept, which had been developed by the Marzola’s family business and turned the Comici Mountain Hut into a real phenomenon in South Tyrol. It was their vision to take the successful Comici Mountain Hut concept to Tyrol and there merge it with long-established tradition as well as the exquisite atmosphere of legendary Sonnbühel to form a unique project.
